Flemish choreographer Jan Martens studied at the Fontys School of Art in Tilburg (NL) and at the Antwerp Conservatoire (BE). Martens deconstructs existing movement idioms, bends them to his will, strips them down to their essence. Via simple transparent structures, he shows humans in all their simplicity, unadorned. Humans as searching creatures: for intimacy, contact and significance. From 2013 until 2014, Martens was artist in residence with ICK and created, among other pieces, The Dog Days are Over. That production marked his breakthrough in the Netherlands. Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten continue their dialogue with Martens through their involvement in his new project The Common People (2016) and the creation Ballet (2019) for the dance ensemble: a new, contemporary and humorous look at the world of classical ballet.
